JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS:
 

Aiming to inculcate the spirit of teamwork through co-curricular activities Junior school held their annual sports on 30th January 2009 at Oxford Mission Ground. The chief guest at this event was our Principal Mr. M. S. Calvert. The event commenced with a March Past by all four houses – Equality, Fraternity, Justice and Liberty headed by the Junior School captain Pallavi Pandey. In all, there were 35 events each of which had a nail-biting finish. The March Past was a spectacular event enhanced by the participation of the Police Band in which Justice House was the winner. Parents enjoyed the drill display which was done with sparkling pom-poms by the students in colourful dresses. Children of classes I and II attired in pink and white dresses displayed through their drill, the national flower- the Lotus. Upper Nursery children dressed up according to the different states of India and Lower Nursery children had a fancy dress competition where they dressed up quite innovatively. Relay races of both boys and girls drew a lot of excitement in which Equality House won the laurels. The Tug-of-war finals was a thrilling event between Liberty and Equality in which the latter won. The over all Athletic Cup was won by Fraternity House and Equality House was the runners up.

 

FOOTBALL:

Students from class VIII -XII participated in the inter class football on 3rd , 5th  and 6th of September and  classes XII A, XI, IX G and VIII A  won the matches respectively.

 

CHESS:

 

The game of the Masterminds is firmly fixing its roots in the school with almost a hundred players within its grip. There are regular Inter-Class and Inter-House events which assist a great deal in the finding and assessing blooming talents.

 

  Aims and Objectives

·      The aim is simple enough – to participate in all major Inter-School events.

 

  Motto:

 

·          “Sportsmanship is the true name of the game”.

 

  Intra-School Events:

 

·         The members are divided into two main divisions. They are Group A (V – VIII) and Group B (IX – XII).

·         The divisions are in accordance with the mental level of the players who compete fairly and skilfully.

·           The club organizes Inter-Class and Inter-House Chess Competitions for both boys and girls.

 

  Inter-School Events:

 

·    Champions in the Ashok Hall Chess Competition where 39 schools competed. Abhirup Kar, a hidden talent, out of nowhere defeated all the schools to become the champion.

 

 

  Star Talents:

·          Abhirup Kar

 

·      Participated in State Level, District Level, National Level and International Level.

·       At National Level, he played against Delhi, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa.

·          At International Level, he played against Bangladesh. He ranked 11th out of 400 players at International Level.

·          5th out of 200 players at National Level.

·          5th out of 250 players all over West Bengal at District Level.

·          He became the champion at the Behala Chess Championship in 2005 and 2006.

·          Champion at the Srijani Chess Championship.

·          Runners-up at the DBCA Chess Championship.

·          Runners-up at the Alekine Chess Championship.

 

CARROM:

 

There are 40 members in the club. The players practice on their respective House days. The school has six International sized carom boards with practice open to all players who show interest and enthusiasm.

 

Aims:

To take part in all major Intra and Inter School events.

 

Motto:

 

“Sharp aim wins you the game.”

 

Intra-School Events:

 

·          There are four main divisions:

              
               Group A – Class V-VI

               Group B – Class VII-VIII

         Group C – Class IX-X

         Group D – Class XI-XII

·          The talents are well-matched and teachers on invigilation ensure fair gaming.

·          The Inter – House Carrom competitions take place every year to enhance the gaming spirit and try to achiever excellence. There are separate tournaments for boys and girls.

·          Inter- Class Carrom Competitions also take place every year for both boys and girls.

 

CRICKET:

 

There are about 30 members in the Cricket Club of the school. They practice under the guidance of Mr. Abhishek Bagchi for 3 ˝ hours. Since the school ground is inadequate, they practice at Oxford Mission Ground. It is a good platform for inquisitives to excel in the language of cricket which is as fascinating as googly, hat trick, and night watchman on strike or a fielder at square leg.

 

Aims and Objectives:

 

  • Providing a platform for students to recognize their hidden cricketing potential.
  • Develops sportsmanship and turns out true gentlemen. Cricket is a gentleman’s game after all!
  • Participating in various City and State Level Competitions to give exposure to the players and showcase the talent of the students.
  • The Cricket Club plans to expand so as to provide a platform even to the students of the junior sections to bring out their talents.
  • We also hope to host an Inter-School cricketing event.

Intra-School Events:

 

·             On the occasion of Republic Day, the club organized a Cricket Tournament between the staff members and students which lasted from 6 a.m. in the morning to 9 p.m. in the night. Even ex-students participated. Neutral umpires were appointed for the matches and the Principal led the staff member team.

·             On 7th May, 2008, our school had the honour to invite Zaheer Khan to inaugurate the Photography Exhibition of Mr.Suman Chakraborty. The event was covered by the media and it was even telecasted live on private channels.  

 

Inter-School Events:

 

·             Our school took part in 2001 in the Eveready All Bengal Invitational Inter-School Double Wicket Cricket Tournament. We became the winners of this tournament.

·             On 26th November, 2004, our school took part in the Leprosy Mission Cricket Tournament under the captaincy of Surjit Singh. Our school reached the quarter-finals of this tournament.

·             In December 2007, our school took part in the Pailan Cricket World School Cricket Tournament under the captaincy of Abhijeet Bag.

 

Star Talents:

 

·             Abhijeet Bag – He was selected in the CAB Under-15 squad and practiced at Eden Gardens for 3 months. He has also played for South Suburban and National Club (A.C. Division).

·         Soumadeep Chatterjee - He was selected for two consecutive years to attend the Bengal Trials at the State Level.

·              Akash Das – He plays for BNR (Bengal Nagpur Railway). He has played at the District Level for Barasat. He was also selected to represent in the Coco-Cola Cup held in Bangalore.

·              Abhiroop Mitra – He is a young and upcoming player of our school and represents South Suburban Club on a regular basis.

·              Arko Ghosh – He plays for the Lunar Recreation Club and Salt Lake Club. He also played at the District Level for Salt Lake Club and the team reached the Semi-Finals of the Monginis Cup.

 

 

KARATE:

 

   The Karate Club is one of the newest additions to the array of clubs   in our school. It was formed in the year 2007.

 

   Aims and Objectives:

 

·          To attract more students, especially girls to join the club.

·      To teach them the art of defending themselves under demanding circumstances.

·          To encourage them to take part at District and State Level Championships.

·      It is compulsory for Classes V and VI to attend Karate Classes held after school hours every Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

 

Intra School Events:

 

·       Selected students from the senior section are trained every Saturday.

 

Internal Training:

 

      The trainers for the Karate Club are:

 They are part of Tirthankar Nandi’s Organization.

 

 

BASKETBALL:

 

The game of Basketball, although not native to India, has created the required craze within the budding talents of National Gems Higher Secondary School which has seen the members growing with each passing month. Consisting of about 150 members, the association trains the budding gems 4 days a week for 2 hours.

 

Aims and Objectives:

 

·          Creating a platform for all member students.

·          The Basketball Club plans to train more students to play at the State Level and National Level.

·          Apart from fair play, physical fitness, team spirit and leadership qualities are what the Club aims to inculcate in the students.

 

Motto:

 

“Team Spirit and Confidence can make us reach heights where nobody has ever reached.”

 

Intra-School Events:

 

·          The Club organizes Inter-House Basketball Tournaments for both boys and girls in the Middle and Senior sections.

·        Every year on Children’s Day, various teams of students and teachers play friendly basketball matches.

 

Inter-School Events: 

 

·          Boys

The school team went to the West Bengal Basketball Association to play Inter-School matches with various renowned schools of Kolkata.

 

·          Girls

The school team participated in the following competitions:-

 

o     Inter-School Basketball Tournament at St.Johns’    Diocesan School (Dio Tornei).

o       The team also went to the West-Bengal Basketball Association.

o   The team went for yet another tournament at K.E.Carmel School, Amtala, where they went on to win the Winners Trophy.

 

Star Talents:

 

·                Shreya Chatterjee

 

·          Played at the State and District Level.

·     Plays for Barisha Athletic Club in the under – 19 category.

·        As part of the State Level team, she entered the Quarter – Finals of the 35th Sub Junior Basketball Championship.

 

THROWBALL:

 

Our school supports many co-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to take part in the various events and groom themselves. One such co-curricular activity is Throwball. At the present moment, there are 60 students playing Throwball. They train separately according to their Houses and together on Fridays.

 

Aims and Objectives:

 

·          Groom the students towards taking up sports and building their enthusiasm.

·          Helping students to maintain the fitness of the body and proper physique.

“Desire, Decision, Discipline and Determination make us win.”

 

Intra – School Events:

 

·            Inter – House Throwball is one of the Competitions held in our school. For the past 3 years, Justice House has been winning the matches.

·               The students are divided into the Junior (V – VIII) and Senior (IX – XII) Groups.

Inter – Class Competitions also prove to be  beneficial. 

 

TABLE TENNIS:

 

On 31st of October, 2009 inter-house TT tournament was held and the winners were Sayan Chowdhury ( Equality) , Kushal Lahiri ( Equality ), Anubhav Das ( Equality ), Tathagata Mukherjee ( Liberty ), Deborshi Sen ( Justice), Sayan Kumar Saha (Justice).

 

Success at Table Tennis is one of the many feathers in the cap of National gems Higher Secondary School. The members practice every day from 2 to 4 P.M. The Principal and the Headmaster put in their best efforts to help the students excel at Table Tennis.

 

Aims and Objectives:

·   Being one of the most recently formed clubs of the school, we have just 12 members.    Thus, our aim is to popularize this sporting activity in the school.

·   To win major events like the State and National Championships.

·   To organize one of the biggest Inter – School Table Tennis Championships in West Bengal.

Motto:

 

“Courage is Destiny.”

·          Selected students of Class III and IV are given training during class hours.


Middle and Senior Section:

 

·          The club organizes Inter – Class Championships for both boys and girls.

Unfortuantely, he had to encounter a major setback. He suffered ligament injuries (Acute Epidemic Orchitis) in 2003, which brought his career to a halt. But he is now determined to rejuvenate his career and is working hard to fulfill his goal of retaining his Championship Title.

 

·          Tathagatha Mukherjee

 

·    Stood 3rd in the tournament held at Pailan World School.

·    He played at the State and District Level at the Netaji Indoor Stadium and at the Sports Authority of India.

·    He reached the Quarter – Finals thrice at the Netaji Indoor Stadium and twice at the Sports Authority of India.

·    He reached the semi-finals round at the Sports Authority of India.

 

·          Deborshi Sen

 

·          Played at the State and District Level at the Netaji Indoor Stadium and the Sports Authority of India.

·          He reached the Quarter – Finals at the Netaji Indoor Stadium and the Sports Authority of India.

 

·          Abhisek Sharma

 

·        Reached Quarter Finals at the State Level Match held at Hind Motors representing West Kolkata.

·       Came 2nd at the tournament organized by Dakshin Palli Nabarun Sangha.

·        Reached the Semi Finals at the Cassimbazar Table Tennis Tournament organized by Barisha Club.

·         Reached the Semi – Finals at the tournament organized by Aikitan Athletic Club.

·      Was awarded the Best Player by Dakshin Palli Nabarun Sangha.
